Annex Move: Communication to Faculty
The following communication was distributed on April 11, 2003 by e-mail to faculty in medicine and biology from Dr. Susan Starr, director of the Biomedical Library:

BML Journals Move to the Annex

During summer 2003, the Biomedical Library will move virtually all its journal volumes published before 1993 to the UCSD Libraries Annex, an offsite storage facility. This move is in preparation for the recently approved addition and renovation of the Biomedical Library.

The new library will have considerably more space than the current building. Unfortunately, during construction, the Library will have less space than it has today. Construction of the addition requires us to vacate a significant portion of the south side of the existing Library.

The volumes being moved will remain in the Annex for the duration of the project, currently scheduled to be completed in mid-2006. We recognize that many of you need to use these materials regularly and hope to make it as easy as possible for you to request them. We will page materials back from the Annex on request daily, Monday through Saturday.

The journals will be moved during summer 2003 in order to minimize disruption during the busier Fall Quarter. The move is still a few months off, but we wanted to let you know about our plans well in advance. Call us if this collection move will create a special problem for you (e.g., if you anticipate making extensive use of the pre-1993 literature this summer while it is in transit).

We will be distributing more details about the collection move and request procedures as they become available. You can also find the latest information on this and other aspects of the BML Renovation/Addition project on the Biomedical Library Addition Project website (http://scilib.ucsd.edu/bml/building/).

If you have any questions or concerns about the building project, please contact Barbara Slater, Capital Projects Coordinator for the Biomedical Library, at bslater@ucsd.edu or (858) 534-1196.
