Biomedical Library Move: Communication to Faculty
The following communication was distributed on April 19, 2004 by e-mail to faculty in medicine and biology from Dr. Susan Starr, director of the Biomedical Library:

The Biomedical Library is Moving

The Biomedical Library will be moving temporarily into new quarters in Geisel Library. The move is scheduled for mid August 2004; the Library will be back in its current location by the summer of 2006.

In September 2004, a construction project will be launched that will completely renovate the existing Biomedical Library and almost double its current size. Originally, the Library had been scheduled to remain in its present location throughout the project. However, in order to deal with a significant budgetary shortfall resulting from the increasing costs of construction in San Diego, the building will now need to be vacated for the length of the project. The Visual Media Group (in the basement) and the Dean's suite next door, will move out at the same time as the Library, allowing the renovation and addition to proceed simultaneously. The move is estimated to save approximately one million dollars in construction costs and shorten the project timeline by about six months.

To accommodate the move, a few low use books will be moved to the Library Annex. Otherwise all of the Library's current services, and all of the current onsite collection, will be available in the Library's new temporary location: the west wing of the lower level of Geisel Library. The collection will be in compact shelving there, and the Biomedical Library service desk, photocopiers, computers, current journals, etc. will be located adjacent to the collection.

We regret that the budget has necessitated this change of plans, and we are working hard to minimize any inconvenience it may cause you. We anticipate that the move will take place the third weekend of August, but we will update you as more exact information becomes available. You may also wish to consult the BML building website, http://biomed.ucsd.edu/building we will be updating this site in the coming weeks with additional information on the status of the project and the move. If you have any questions or concerns about the project or the move, please contact me at sstarr@ucsd.edu or (858) 534-3418.
