Biomedical Library Move: Communication to Faculty
The following communication was distributed on January 19, 2005 by e-mail to faculty in medicine, biology and pharmacy from Dr. Susan Starr, director of the Biomedical Library:

Biomed Has Moved: Now What?

The Biomedical Library has moved into temporary quarters in the lower level of Geisel Library to permit a much needed renovation of, and addition to, the existing building. Construction will begin shortly and is scheduled to be completed in 2006.

All existing staff, services and onsite collections have been moved to the new temporary location. While that's only a short walk away, we know it may be harder to use the library during the next 18 to 24 months. Here are a few things that may make it easier:

1. RETURNING BOOKS: The book bin formerly located at the entrance to the library is now at the east end of the Leichtag building. You may return library materials other than reserves there, or at any other campus Library, including books received on interlibrary loan. The book bin is emptied daily.

2. OBTAINING COPIES OF JOURNAL ARTICLES: We continue to add more and more electronic content, including journal backfiles. But if the item you want is not available in electronic form, you can request a copy of it from our "Library Photocopy Services." Copies cost $3.50 apiece and will be delivered to you on the web - or you can get a photocopy if you prefer. To request a copy, fill out the form at http://scilib.ucsd.edu/bml/services/article.html and include an index number for billing in the "comments" field.

3. GETTING HELP: You can get help with research, find out about journal availability, or check on services by calling the BML Reference desk at (858) 534-1201 during the day or calling the BML Circulation Desk nights and weekends at (858) 534-3253. You can also use our virtual, Ask-a-Librarian reference service, at http://biomed.ucsd.edu/ask/

4. BROWSING CURRENT JOURNALS: If you'd like to be notified when a new issue of a favorite journal becomes available, consider setting up an "alert" with the journal publisher. Then the table of contents of each new issue will be mailed to you, along with links to full text of the content (if we subscribe to that title in electronic form). Check the homepage of your favorite journal for directions on how to set up an alert, or call the BML Reference Desk ((858) 534-1201) to arrange a consultation with a librarian who can show you how to do this. Look for our new "Current Alerting" class coming up in Februrary.

5. LOOKING AT NEW BOOKS: The Biomedical Library's new book list is now available online. See the link on our homepage http://biomed.ucsd.edu to a list of recently received books. Many of our new book records contain the table of contents of the book, making it easier to see if it is of interest to you.

We look forward to seeing you in Geisel or helping you via phone, email or Ask-a-Librarian. Directions to our location in Geisel are at http://biomed.ucsd.edu/services/llwwn.htm
