BIOMEDICAL LIBRARY
Several computing options are available: InfoStations: - 22 public-access computers with access to the Internet and networked printing. These computers can be used by anyone - no logins required. These are not equipped with word-processing or other office applications.

Information Commons - over 70 computers available to UCSD users via Active Directory login. These feature Internet, as well as productivity software including Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Acrobat Professional, and graphics software. Four additional Commons computers are available in the Graduate Study, opening on September 18. Medical students can access their Novell Netware file storage from Educational Computing via an icon on the desktop on these computers.

Wireless laptops five wireless-equipped laptops available for check-out to UCSD faculty, staff, medical students and graduate students. These laptops provide wireless Internet access and Microsoft Office applications. School of Medicine users who are registered with the School of Medicine's Educational Computing can log into their account for access to file storage and specialized software.

Wireless Access: use your own laptop
The Biomedical Library has building-wide access to the UCSD Wireless network.
 
Interested in getting wireless access for your laptop?   Academic Computing Services has a Wireless Network page with forms for registering your computer for access, and ResNet's Website offers information about how it works with additional links to instructions for using particular wireless cards. The UCSD bookstore sells wireless cards for laptops, PDAs etc. for around $50-80.

NEW: printing now available for wireless laptop users.

Scanning/CD Station: we maintain one workstation with a public scanner, Microsoft Office and graphics software, CD/DVD playback and CD burning. Assistance is available with use of the scanner and graphics software.

Printing for these computers is available via Imprints debit cards, 10c/page for black & white, 50c/page for color.


 
MEDICAL CENTER LIBRARY (Hillcrest)
In addition to eight InfoStations, the Medical Center Library's (MCL) Computer Room provides access to nine Windows PC’s equipped with DVD/CD-RW drives and Microsoft Office XP. Debit-card printing is available and a "digital imaging station" with a scanner, Adobe Acrobat Professional and image editing software is also available.

The MCL Computer Room is a controlled key-access facility. Users must leave their UCSD campus ID or their UCSD Medical Center Badge at the Service Desk in order to gain access. The MCL Computer Room is open during the Library’s regular business hours.

Two laptops are available for check-out from the MCL Service Desk. These laptops provide internet access over the wireless network and are also equipped with the Microsoft Office Suite. Printing over the wireless network is not currently available.

Other computing facilities at the Medical Center
Additional computers at the UCSD Medical Center are located in the Medical Student Lounge in the West Wing (Room 105) of the hospital. This facility is operated by Educational Computing of the School of Medicine and is restricted to UCSD SOM medical students.
 
OTHER CAMPUS LABS
UCSD faculty, staff, and students may use various General Access Computer Labs located throughout campus for email, word processing, etc. Academic Computing Services maintains a Web page of these labs, showing opening hours as well as information the hardware, software and printers available in each lab.

Faculty may also reserve some of these labs for limited times during the quarter for classes. Information on printing in these labs is available from Academic Computing Services.
