Administrative History

Bear Facts is the newsletter of the Oceanids, the women’s service organization of Scripps Institution of Oceanography and UC San Diego. Women’s groups had been meeting informally at Scripps since World War II, but they did not formally organize until 1952 under the leadership of Helen Raitt and Miriam Fox. First called the Scripps Wives, the group’s name was soon changed to Oceanids for the 3000 ocean nymph daughters of the Titans Oceanus and Tethys.

The Oceanids’ mission was “to foster social affairs for all on the Scripps Campus and to provide a means by which new students and new personnel may become acquainted. This being their purpose, the Scripps Wives Club became an organization of all women of SIO.” (Helen Raitt, 8 May 1952. In: Elizabeth N. Shor, Thirty Years of Oceanids: A History from 1952-1982, UCSD, 1982.) Helen Raitt served as the club’s first president from 1952-1953.

By 1960, the campus had expanded into the University of California at San Diego, and the Oceanids resolved to remain one organization, rather than split into upper and lower campus clubs, and to place their emphasis on service rather than social events. The Oceanids were influential in founding the International Center at UCSD, the Newcomers Group, and bringing the People-to-People program to UCSD, which sponsored exchanges between UCSD and schools and universities in Mexico.

Bear Facts was founded in 1962 after Public Relations director Lon Manar informed the Oceanids that cultural activities sponsored by campus administration would lose financial support if attendance did not increase. They decided to start a newsletter and calendar that would be mailed directly to the homes of UCSD families, rather than relying on flyers sent through campus mail. The newsletter was named  Bear Facts by Dottie Forbes, and a bear was chosen for its logo.

The calendar has always been a major part of the Bear Facts newsletter, listing the Interest Groups (ranging in subject from bird watching to investing), theater, film, dance, music, art, lectures, and special events on and near campus. The newsletter also features profiles and obituaries of UCSD women, honors and awards to UCSD personnel, campus news, and personal narratives and articles by Oceanids members and UCSD faculty and staff.

Scope and Contents

This accession includes bound copies of the Oceanids' newsletter Bear Facts from 1962-1969 and 1976-1985, and unbound copies from 1962-2007.

A copy of Elizabeth N. Shor's Thirty Years of Oceanids: A History from 1952 to 1982 (UCSD, 1982) is included with the first bound volume of  Bear Facts, and also with the unbound issues of 1982.

Provenance

Issues of Bear Facts were received by SIO Library and SIO Archives from various sources. One set of  Bear Facts, 1962-1969 and 1976-1985, was bound by SIO Archives. A copy of Elizabeth N. Shor's  Thirty Years of Oceanids: A History from 1952 to 1982 was bound with the first volume. Another set of  Bear Facts, 1962-1991, was microfilmed by UCLA Micrographics for the Archives in 1992.
