Administrative History

Scripps Institution of Oceanography had its roots in a summer marine biological station conducted by professor William E. Ritter for the University of California’s Zoology Department. Ritter’s goal was to carry out “a biological survey of that part of the Pacific Ocean adjacent to the coast of California.”

The first summer session was held at Pacific Grove in 1892, followed by Santa Catalina Island in 1893. Further “expeditions to the seaside” by the Biology Department are mentioned in the University’s Biennial Report of 1894-1896, and research “both hydrographic and biological” was conducted at San Pedro from 1901-1902 (Biennial Report, December 1902.)

By 1903, the summer program had been moved to a boathouse at the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego. The Marine Biological Association of San Diego was established on September 26, 1903 with Ritter as the scientific director. Financial support was secured from E.W. Scripps, Ellen Browning Scripps, Dr. Fred Baker, and other citizens of San Diego.

According to their By-Laws, the general purpose of the Marine Biological Association of San Diego was “to carry on a biological and hydrographic survey of the waters of the Pacific Ocean adjacent to the coast of Southern California; to build and maintain a public aquarium and museum; and to prosecute such other kindred undertakings as the Board of Trustees may from time to time deem it wise to enter upon.”

From 1905-1910, the biological station was located at La Jolla Cove in the “little green laboratory,” and in 1910, the institution moved to its present location in La Jolla on Pueblo Lot 1298, which was acquired from the City of San Diego. The Marine Biological Association of San Diego transferred the station to the University of California in 1912, as was their original intent, and it was renamed the Scripps Institution for Biological Research.

Ritter continued as scientific director of the institution, now open year-round, until his retirement in 1923. The next director, T. Wayland Vaughan, focused the institution’s research on oceanography and renamed it the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1925.

Graduate degrees were awarded by the University of California at Berkeley for research conducted at Scripps Institution of Oceanography until 1936, when the University of California at Los Angeles began to award graduate degrees. In 1960, the University of California at San Diego was established in La Jolla, and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography became a graduate school of that university.
